1. Acceptance

Definition: The formal process of accepting delivery of a product or deliverable.

Simple Meaning: Final approval of completed work after inspection.

Example:
After installing a high-pressure pump in a plant, the client checks performance and signs the completion document. That final approval is called Acceptance.


2. Acceptance Criteria

Definition: Performance requirements and essential conditions that must be achieved before deliverables are accepted.

Simple Meaning: Conditions that must be satisfied before approval.

Example:
For a pump system:

  • Pressure: 150 bar

  • Flow: 250 m³/hr

  • No leakage

Only after meeting these conditions, the work is accepted.


3. Accountability

Definition: The obligation to report on one's actions and take responsibility for outcomes.

Simple Meaning: Being answerable for your work.

Example:
If you are handling erection work, you are accountable for:

  • Safety

  • Quality

  • Timeline

  • Cost


4. Activity

Definition: Work performed using resources to produce a specific output.

Simple Meaning: A task in the project.

Examples of Activities:

  • Foundation bolt fixing

  • Equipment erection

  • Welding

  • Commissioning

Each small task is called an Activity.


5. Activity Duration

Definition: The total time required to complete an activity.

Simple Meaning: Time needed to complete a task.

Example:

  • Motor installation → 1 day

  • Alignment → 2 days

  • Trial run → 3 days

This is known as Activity Duration.


6. Actual Dates

Definition: The real start and finish dates recorded during project execution.

Simple Meaning: The actual time when work really started and finished.

Example:

  • Planned start: 1 March

  • Actual start: 5 March

These are Actual Dates.


7. Actuals

Definition: The real cost, effort, and time used to complete project tasks.

Simple Meaning: What you actually spent.

Example:

  • Planned Cost: ₹10 lakh

  • Actual Cost: ₹12 lakh

The ₹12 lakh is called Actual Cost (Actuals).


8. Alternatives

Definition: Different possible solutions or approaches to achieve project objectives.

Simple Meaning: Different options available.

Example:
For cutting steel plates:

  • CNC EDM

  • Laser cutting

  • Plasma cutting

These are Alternatives.


9. Analogous Estimating

Definition: Estimating based on similar past projects.

Simple Meaning: Using past experience to estimate a new project.

Example:
If a previous pump foundation cost ₹8 lakh, a similar new project may be estimated around ₹8–9 lakh.

This is Analogous Estimation (Top-down approach).


10. Approach Statement

Definition: A high-level explanation of how the project will achieve its goals.

Simple Meaning: The overall execution plan.

Example Approach:

  1. Civil foundation

  2. Mechanical erection

  3. Electrical work

  4. Testing & commissioning


11. Assumption

Definition: Something taken as true without proof during planning.

Simple Meaning: A belief considered true while planning.

⚠️ Important: Assumptions are not facts

Example Assumptions:

  • Labour available = 40 workers

  • Continuous power supply

  • Material delivered on time

If these change, your plan will be affected.


12. Authority

Definition: The power to make decisions and direct others.

Simple Meaning: Official power to give instructions.

Example:
A Project Manager has authority to:

  • Approve work

  • Assign manpower

  • Issue instructions

Authority helps in smooth project execution.


13. Award Agreement

Definition: An agreement between a donor organization and the implementing agency.

Simple Meaning: Official funding agreement for a project.

Also Known As:

  • Grant Agreement

  • Cooperative Agreement

Example:
If a government funds a skill development project and signs an agreement with an NGO, that document is an Award Agreement.
